- Build Your Personal Brand
The first thing I'd do is build my personal brand on LinkedIn. This is a compounding asset you own, unlike databases or PSLs that belong to your employer. When you go solo, you'll have immediate access to an audience who wants to work with you.
I started my agency with zero network in rec-to-rec, which was challenging. Had I built my personal brand earlier, I would've had immediate access to people, avoiding the slow start and lost opportunities.
- Use Signal Hire to Build Your Pipeline
Get Signal Hire to build a pipeline of clients and candidates. It allows Boolean searching and integrates with ATS or CRM software. Even without a CRM, you can export to Excel and import later. This gives you a talent pool to tap into when you launch.
- Pitch Retainers Every Time
I wish I'd converted to a retained business model earlier. Working contingent led to wasted time and unpaid work. My personal brand now gives me the leverage to insist on retainers. Learn to sell retainers to ensure cash flow and avoid wasting time.
- Work Out Your Finances Properly
I underestimated costs when starting out, from job board fees to freelancer expenses. Make sure you accurately calculate your expenses and required revenue. I offer one-on-one coaching to help set up recruitment agencies if you need assistance.
- Set KPIs and Core Hours
Initially, I lacked structure, thinking being my own boss meant complete freedom. I quickly learned to set KPIs and core hours. Set targets for client and candidate interactions, and stick to dedicated hours for proactive work. This ensures you're hitting your numbers and not just reacting to others' needs.
